Justice for Palestine announces plans to march over Story Bridge in Magan-djin/Brisbane as part of the August 24 national day of action.

Justice for Palestine Magan-djin (JFP) has announced the group is planning to march over the Story Bridge聽in Magan-djin/Brisbane on August 24, the national day of action for Palestine.

JFP鈥檚 Remah Naji told an August 7 that it 鈥渕ade this decision to reflect the urgency of the situation in Gaza, where a livestreamed genocide perpetrated by Israel has been occurring for the past 22 months鈥.

The Story Bridge was lit up in Israeli colours on October 8, 2023. A number of times since then, the Palestinian community has appealed to the mayor to light the bridge in Palestinian colours as an expression of solidarity with the victims of Israel鈥檚 genocide.

The mayor has repeatedly refused this request.聽

鈥淲e are willing to work collaboratively with police to make this peaceful protest happen safely,鈥 Naji said.

Naji made a direct appeal to all unions and their leaderships to support the Palestinian solidarity movement and this protest. She said that the 鈥渇ull strength of the union movement鈥 had played a critical role in opposing repressive regimes in the past and could make a big difference.

She also called civil society organisations and people of conscience to join the march, saying it would be 鈥渁n incredible show of solidarity with the Palestinian people鈥.

Omar Ashour spelled out the rally鈥檚 demands on Labor: Impose sanctions on Israel; end the two way arms sales between Israel and Australia (including weapons parts); and divest from all companies that operate businesses in the Occupied Palestinian Territories.

鈥淭he current government has been saying that they don't have a lot of leverage in Palestine,鈥 Ashour said. 鈥淭hese three demands are ways that they can have some leverage.鈥

The rally will gather at 1pm at Raymond Park in Kangaroo Point on August 24.
