Chanting 鈥淣o Trump, no KKK, no fascist USA鈥 and 鈥淎nti-choice, anti-Queer, Liberals are not welcome here鈥, 200 people 聽on January 31 to oppose US President Donald Trump鈥檚 far-right agenda.
The rally also took a stand against those seeking to take that agenda in the same direction here.
Several speakers referred to the January 28 decision of the Queensland Liberal National Party government to stop young trans people from accessing puberty blockers and other hormone therapies from state-run clinics.
Greens MP Michael Berkman told that the decision was 鈥減ure dog whistling鈥 and 鈥渇ar-right politics at its worst鈥.
He said the right used anti-trans rhetoric in the previous federal election and that it is 鈥渄evastating鈥 to see 鈥渂asic health care is being taken away from children鈥 for similar political agendas.
He pointed out that children who are not wanting to transition are still allowed to access puberty blockers for their health needs: only trans children are being denied care.
鈥淲e heard from a family this week whose child was one appointment away from getting that hormone therapy underway and now they鈥檙e just going to be denied that therapy for at least a year,鈥 he said.
People carried signs saying 鈥淗ands off our bodies鈥 and 鈥淧rotect trans kids鈥.
Jonathan Strauss, a Queensland Senate candidate for Socialist Alliance who took part in the rally, told GL聽that 鈥淏uilding the left is the way to defeat the far right鈥. He said: 鈥淲e鈥檙e going to have to build an alternative in the streets and the electoral arena.鈥
