Protests in Sorong on the 27th of August 2025 against four political prisoners being tortured and transferred to South Sulawesi were met with brutal police violence and mass detentions. Over 30 pro-democracy activists have been brutalised and arrested. The TNI (Indonesian Army) is continuing to hunt down activists to arrest, with Sayang Mandabayang, a pro-democracy leader and mother of four, on the top of their list.
The current situation in Sorong leads to international concerns and demands our solidarity.
The international solidarity community for West Papua demands:
- Stop criminalising West Papuan political leaders
- Hands off activist Sayang Mandabayan and other human rights defenders
- Release the West Papuan political prisoners
- Stop raids and arrests and secure political freedom
