Gimuy/Cairns volunteers for Dr Jonathan Strauss, lead Socialist Alliance (SA) Senate candidate, have criticised the illegal destruction of their roadside election corflutes.

“We’re determined to get the word out about Jonathan’s campaign,” Carine Visschers told һƷ̽��, adding that Strauss has made the genocidal assault on Gaza his “top issue” after emergency action for public housing and the climate.

Visschers said SA, a small party, relies on roadside corflutes to spread the word. “People have told us how glad they were to see these up.”

Within a week, many were defaced, destroyed or removed.

Strauss said such destruction is undemocratic and flies in the face of free speech.

“Corflutes are how campaigns that aren’t financed by billionaires can afford to get the word out.” He added that the criminal damage and theft has been reported.

“Socialist Alliance has and will consistently oppose Israel’s attempt to ethnically cleanse Gaza,” Strauss said. “The fact that Australian government took two weeks to call out the Israeli military’s ambush and execution-style war crime killings of 15 humanitarian workers in Gaza on March 23 is unacceptable.”

Visschers said SA is the only party “confidently saying what we stand for” and urged supporters to “counteract the haters” by sharing SA’s corflute with their networks.

“People deserve to know that there is a radical alternative to the major parties.”
