Hundreds rallied on October 29 to celebrate the Supreme Court's ruling that a January ban on young people receiving new gender affirming care in state clinics was unlawful.
However, six hours later, Tim Nicholls, the Liberal National Party Health Minister, imposed a new ban.
Piper Valkyrie said the turnout was “heartwarming” and “refreshing” even though “yesterday was tough”. “It's amazing to see the community come out every single time,” they said.
Lawyer Ren Shike from the LGBTI Legal Service told the rally that they were proud of the work they'd done on the case.
The government was making decisions “without consulting a single trans person, or even a health provider,” they told the rally.
The Supreme Court case was brought by the parent of a young trans person, who had been days away from receiving treatment at the time of the January ban.
Several young people told the rally about their experiences of devastation, and about the positive experiences they had had with gender affirming care before the ban came into effect.
One person told the rally that the government has “blood on their hands” although they probably don't care “because they're used to the smell and they have very nice soap”.
Necho Brocchi led the rally in chants of “They'll never destroy trans love, trans joy” and “Trans rights, all day, all night”.
Drag Queen Ann Tifa also presented at the rally.
